2. What is NEK?

The Nuendo Expansion Kit includes Audio-specific tools for Music Production including Professional Scoring and MusicXML file support, a MIDI Drum Editor, and the 4 new Instruments from Cubase 4; HALion One, Prologue, Mystic, and Spector. It is intended for crossover users who need both Post and Audio Production features.

3. Do I need Cubase or Nuendo?

Cubase 4 is for Musicians, Composers, and Producers, while Nuendo 4 is for the Video Post community.  If you are recording musicians, writing music for film and T.V., producing dance and hip-hop, etc., Cubase is for you.  However, if you are involved in video post-production, live sound, game sound design, or another specialized post field, Nuendo is the one.  The Expansion Kit is an add-on tool kit for people who find themselves in the latter category but who still do some Music production as well.

9. What if I have the special Cubase 4/Nuendo 3 combi license?

Be sure you have registered your combi license at Steinberg.net in the “MySteinberg” area, and that you have checked the box to have your information forwarded to Yamaha Corporation of America in the personal information area. It will also be a good idea to wait until you are at a convenient stopping point with your Cubase projects, as the process may not be instant.

When you upgrade to Nuendo 4 from the N3/C4 combi license, the combi license will be replaced with a single Nuendo 4 license.  You may then contact Steinberg Registration at (714) 228-3301 to receive a full replacement Cubase 4 license at no charge.

12. Will Nuendo 4 open Cubase 4 projects—and what opens what these days anyway?

Nuendo 4, Cubase 4, and Studio 4 projects are interchangeable (logically, however, specific features that are not in the currently-used version will not transfer over with the project. For example, when you open a Nuendo 4 project with a plug-in from N4 in Studio 4 and that plug-in is not in Studio 4, that plug-in's information will be discarded).

13. Can I crossgrade from Nuendo 4 to Cubase 4 (or vice versa) and retain the license for the product from which I am crossgrading so I can run both Nuendo 4 and Cubase 4?

Crossgrades are for people who have determined that they are on the wrong platform and wish to switch platforms, which is why you lose the original license. If you need multiple licenses for multiple, different products you will have to purchase those additional products as new versions. Since Cubase and Nuendo are for different markets, this should not be a requirement for the majority of users. (The NEK is designed for those Nuendo 4 users who wish to do some Audio production in addition to their post-production work.)
