Art and science of sound recordingYou can’t put a price on knowledge, and there are over 40 minutes of free HD video on the new Alan Parsons site www.artandscienceofsound.com for his Art & Science of Sound Recording project. Interviews, clips, and 1 min previews of the first six sections from this epic video series on recording are all pearls of wisdom from the man who began his career at Abbey Road with The Beatles, and who went on to engineer The Dark Side Of The Moon before embarking on his own multi-platinum career as a producer and artist.

XILS 3 VST harks back to the seventies

VCS3The XILS 3 VST from Xils-lab, whose LE version is currently being offered to the SteinbergUsers community at an amazing special price, takes its inspiration from the British analog synth, the EMS VCS3.

SteinbergUsers.com's close relationship with the Keyfax Buyer's Guide author Julian Colbeck enables us to reproduce Julian's original review of the VCS3 for one of the Keyfax books.

All synthesizers have an element of toys for the boys about them and the VCS3 is the quintessential gadget for spotty Herberts who were no good at sports and liked to spend their free time in the science lab playing around with bits of wire and bunson burners.

The VCS3 looks like a nice piece of laboratory equipment with its large control knobs and pin matrix patchbay encased in a real wood frame, and its penchant for spacey, whoop-whooop-blip-swoosh type noises that are totally unusable in any musical setting - aside from rhythm or sound effects at which it is totally brilliant - reinforces that image still further.

Major New DVD on recording with Alan Parsons, featuring Steinberg!

Thursday 15th Jan at Winter NAMM in Los Angeles: Yamaha and Steinberg hosted a press conference on the forthcoming Alan Parsons Art & Science Of Sound Recording DVD.

Producer Julian Colbeck talked about the inspiration for the DVD—recording with Alan Parsons more than twenty years ago using Steinberg Pro 24 (!) and then subsequently on a video about ‘home recording’.  “Nowadays, people can buy professional recording equipment for pennies on the dollar” said Colbeck. “But actually making a record still takes as much skill, care, patience, and experience as it ever did.”

Colbeck went on to introduce Alan Parsons, who was accompanied by a gaggle of top producers featured in the DVD including Jonas Brothers producer John Fields, Steely Dan maestro Eliot Scheiner, Clapton, Bonnie Raitt producer Ed Cherney, and Ocean Way owner, engineer, and loudspeaker guru Allen Sides.

The ensuing ‘Producers Panel’ then discussed some of today’s hot topics in recording technology including The Level Wars, MP3 audio, and the psychology of dealing with artists in the studio – subjects that The Art & Science Of Sound Recording DVD examines and explores alongside almost every other aspect of recording, from acoustics and soundproofing to studio tools (EQ, compression, delays and reverb etc), to miking drums, vocals, guitars, and more, to mixing and pre-mastering.

Cubase is both Alan Parsons’ and Eliot Scheiner’s platform of choice, and is the featured DAW in the DVD. The DVD, which also employs the MR816 CSX interface, is due to launch in October.

Ross, who’s extensive list of credits include “The Butterfly Effect”, “Blade II”, and “De-Lovely,” runs a busy post-production studio out of his “home” studio, though this is definitely not your average home studio.  In fact it is a multi-million dollar facility and the embodiment of cutting-edge technology, boasting, among other gear, two Euphonix System 5-MC mixing desks seated prominently inside of a full-sized high-definition surround-equipped theater, and with multiple high-powered machines running Nuendo 3 from the machine room.
