You can reread my original post to check, but I think I've done all that. I went back and reset the TASCAM in the Control Panel to 'normal latency' and in Cubase 4 LE I reset Devices>Device Setup>UST Audio System>US-144> Audio Priority to 'Normal', Disk Preload to '2 second', and checked 'lower latency', and the pops, clicks and dropouts all got a lot worse, as expected, (then I put everything back to the best settings with longer latency).
Later I went back to the Steinberg.net site and went through the system requirements. If there's any weakness in my system, it's that my hard drive is only 5400rpm, but since I only want to record 5 minutes of mono audio at a time, and I have 3.5 GB of RAM, is there any way to tell Cubase to use only RAM for recording audio, or to tell Windows to allocate more RAM to Cubase 4 LE?
What else can I try?
