Pops, Clicks and Dropout
      06/30/08 08:57 PM

I’m experiencing pops, clicks and dropout. I have little experience with MIDI or with any product similar to Cubase, but I have read the Tutorial and looked through the Operation Manual and didn’t see any topic specifically addressing this problem. I’m using Cubase LE 4.0.3 that came with a TASCAM US-144 interface that I just bought. My computer is a Toshiba Satellite A105/4001 with a Centrino chip at 1.66 GHz with 3 GB RAM running Windows XP Home Edition, SP 3, that I just defragmented. The sound card that came with the computer is Realtek HD Audio and I’ve used that or the TASCAM Driver that was installed with my US-144 interface. I’m recording an acoustic grand piano into a mono microphone, with no MIDI. I’ve turned off networking. In the Control Panel I set the Processor Scheduling to favor Background Services, set the TASCAM Control Panel Audio Performance to Highest Latency. In the Devices Setup > VST Audio System I selected the TASCAM US-144 ASIO driver with Very High Audio Priority, selected 6 for Disk Preload (and tried other settings), unchecked Lower Latency and unchecked Adjust for Record Latency and left the default value of 0 Samples in the Record Shift. I’m assuming that if I’m just recording solo acoustic piano I should set latency as high as possible. I’m also assuming that the problem is that my processor can’t keep up. Is my computer adequate? Are these settings correct? Is there some additional setting that I missed? Will the full version of Cubase work any better than the LE version?
