It sounds as I thought. Your CPU is just getting hit pretty hard the processing. There are some manufacturers such as Waves that make "light" versions of reverbs, etc. However, in the meantime, using 1 Reverb as a FX track and using that for all your tracks means less instances of Reverb hitting your CPU at once.

How much hard drive space do you have available? Do you save all your programs and projects to same drive? Have you you run a defrag of your drives lately? I would look to clean up as much of your PC as possible to assure enough "head-room" is available. Google "XP optimization for music" and you should find some tips on how to better optimize your PC for music use.
