No Click Track, Latency Issues, Loss of Recording
      #8910 - 09/25/08 02:55 PM

I am a first-timer in the recording world, except years of sequencing on my yamaha motif7 - a world very different from digital. I have a Toshiba PC with 2038MB RAM, an Intel T5200 Core 2 Duo 1.6Ghz processor, and 32-bit Windows Vista Home Premium (according to the Presonus Tech, I should be OK to record).

My Cubase LE came with a Presonus Firestudio Project I bought just a couple of weeks ago. During one of my first recording attempts I lost both the audio and the click track at about measure 15. I still had audio signal through the Presonus, but Cubase was not recognizing it (the blue audio lines next to the track were no longer moving). Since then, I have not been able to utilize the click track at all - it just does not function, and I have tried playing with the settings.

Since then, I upgraded to LE 4.1.3 through the website. Now when recording longer segments, my audio track is spliced several times; the longer I play, the more it is spliced and the further behind the recording is from the tempo line during record. And I still don't have a click track.

I have problems with playback, too. If I let cubase rest for a few minutes after I've recorded, when I come back to it and try to play back nothing is there (and yes, the monitor button is off - gray - but I've tried turning it on and off, too). I am not sure why it will play back one minute and give me nothing the next.

I don't know if there are some known bugs with Windows Vista, but maybe that's a problem? Also, so you know, I have upgraded everything I can - Presonus drivers, LE 4 upgrades - and I have run Disk Defrag and cleaned up every unnecessary file I could find.

Thank you very much for your attention and help. I wish I had this all figured out by now, but I am glad there is support for all this.

I forgot to mention: regarding the playback problem, I have tried changing the buffer size in the Presonus FireControl, but to no avail.

Also, I have just begun experimenting with recording. So I am only recording one track at a time (acoustic guitar or vox) and have recorded only two total in a given project. That said, I don't believe there is a heavy audio load being translated to Cubase.

Another thing I should bring up as a potential problem is that I am running from a six-pin firewire (Presonus) into a four-pin (PC). I don't know if there is a problem there. As I said in the previous post, everything is as upgraded as I can get it right now (at least, as far as I know)including the firewire port.

Thanks again for your help!

The first thing I would do is check with Presonus and make sure the firewire port on your laptop is compatible. Many types of firewire ports do not work well with audio interfaces. This can cause pops/clicks, dropouts, and communication errors between your software host and the hardware drivers.

Kyle, I worked some things out with Presonus and I have the click track again! However, I am still losing playback when I come back to my project after a few minutes - if I record and playback immediately, I'm fine; if I wait for 10 minutes, nothing plays. Also, my recording is still being spliced as I play, and I can hear it when it happens - the click track stops and volume is diminished until it comes back. Any ideas? Thanks for your help!

Do you have anything else plugged in FireWire?

Thanks

No, and I only have one firewire port. The only other hardware I have plugged in is my printer via USB.

I did try disabling the laptop (RealTek) speakers and used the presonus as my sound card (with other speakers connected to the presonus). I tried playing a couple of songs via Media Player and the sound cut out after about 20 seconds. I also tried playing video using flashplayer (while researching the pres. candidates online) and that cut out after just a few seconds.

It would seem that I'm having a hardware issue, but I'm not sure of the source on the inside that's causing the malfunction - sound card, connections, etc. Maybe you have an idea. I am calling Presonus as I type this, but your expertise is valued as well. Thanks!

Same hear. It was working fine then all audio messed up (record and playback) got that back and then click track stopped. Lots of inconsistency with LE4.

Let me know what Presonus has to say. Since it is also happens out in Windows it could potentially be a bad unit.

Thanks

Unit is fine. It works like a champ with 1.1. It is with LE4. It was very inconsistent. Presonus can't find the issue. I uninstalled and reinstalled. Works in 4.03 didn't in 4.12 and then worked for about an hour in 4.13.
