Trouble installing new VST Sound Collection Vol. I
      #8781 - 09/18/08 08:13 PM

Has anyone had any problems installing the new "VST Sound Collection Vol. I" released August 28, 2008? I followed the scant instructions given, but do not see the new sounds in HalionOne. Here's what I did:
1) Plugged in my USB dongle
2) Downloaded all five files
3) Executed the first file (.EXE) to join the files
-- it wanted to save to "Mozilla\Firefox" directory by default; I changed this to my Desktop.
3) Followed the prompts on the install wizard
4) Once the wizard finished, I launched Cubase Studio 4
5) Opened HalionOne, and clicked "Create" to create a fresh track for it.
6) Looked for the new sounds in HalionOne, but they aren't there??
-- there is a category called "S90ES", for example, but when I click on it, there are no patches in it.
7) Double-double-checked to confirm that, Yes, I had successfully upgraded CS4 to version 4.5.2

I'm probably making a stupid error.. like, maybe I need to find the new sounds from within HalionOne and import them? or copy them into some particular directory? or or?? I'm stumped.

Go to Start-->Programs-->Cubase-->Application Data Folder.

Remove all the files and folders here with Cubase closed then start Cubase. This should bring the presets/patches up correctly.

I hate to say it, but this was very, very bad advice. Deleting the files in that folder wiped out all of my customized templates, including all of my MIDI/audio driver settings. Nothing at all worked anymore.

I tried just restoring the Templates folder first from the Recycle Bin, but while the templates appeared, the drivers did not connect properly. I restored all the deleted AppData files, but while my customized Cubase templates appeared, my MIDI controller no longer worked. I had to uninstall and reinstall not only the controller drivers, but also the application software that came with it (M-Audio's KeyRig). Amazingly, I did not have to reinstall my Motif ES drivers as well.

All in all, I'm back to square one, everything is working again. This mis-advice has cost me several hours, and in the end, I still do not have the new sounds appearing in HalionOne.

Is it possible that only 1 file needed to be replaced? One file specific to Halion?

Everything in Cubase should be as it was before if you restored all the files and folders. Sorry it was not.. it is odd it effected things like your drivers which do not really relate to your preferences.

Keep in mind there are two parts to the installer. Once your export the files to your desktop and the first installer completes, a second one pops up to finish everything. Did you run both parts?

Regarding the drivers and preferences, since I have a couple of different controllers -- an M-Audio KeyRig25 and the Yamaha Motif ES8 -- I have different templates for each configuration. Also, I'm using ASIO4ALL since it resolves the latency problem with my laptop that the DirectX ASIO driver had, and these two custom templates include ASIO4ALL setup in the Device Manager, as opposed to the out-of-box defaults. And, as I said, just the M-Audio had to be re-installed, the Motif was OK, so it must have been some way the KeyRig soft-synth software saved the driver preferences that got broken...

I did run both parts of the installer. Is there a way to save the files over to the c:\program files\ folders for Halion, maybe, instead of to the user-specific AppData folder? I'm unclear on what exactly the "installer" is doing. Can I find and load the new sound banks from within Halion? If so, maybe I just don't know where to look...

I attached a detailed document on installing and loading the Sound Colletion. Let me know if it helps.

Unfortunately, I'm getting the same result. I have attached some screen shots that might help in the search for what's wrong... could it be a Vista problem? I noticed your example was on an XP computer.

Please have the techies check it out. Thanks in advance...

Hello,

I would suggest two things.

First, trash your application data folder. Go to the start menu, all programs, Cubase Studio 4, Cubase Studio 4 application data folder. Trash all the files and folders in the app data folder.

Then start CS4, and open Halionone.

If this still fails, I would suggest right clicking on the HalionOne plugin and use Locate Contents. Use this dialog to point HalionOne to its sound banks C:/Program Files/Common Files/Steinberg folder.

Thank you.

On the first point, please read above in this thread and note that deleting the user AppData files also deletes any customized templates. I did this and not only were my custom templates deleted, but the new sound banks still did not appear in HALionOne.

I'll try this Locate Contents function tonight, but I have ask -- am I the only Windows Vista user that has run into a problem? Aside from Preference settings and my custom templates, there is nothing unusual or non-out-of-the-box about my Cubase Studio 4, and I've done no customization of Vista, just the automatic updates from Microsoft.

Hello,

I would imagine that other Vista users might have had the same problem in isolated cases but it is not a problem specific to that OS (I believe users with mac and xp have also had the problem). Please let me know if the content still is not fixed.
