Pops, Clicks and Dropout
      #7409 - 06/30/08 08:57 PM

I’m experiencing pops, clicks and dropout. I have little experience with MIDI or with any product similar to Cubase, but I have read the Tutorial and looked through the Operation Manual and didn’t see any topic specifically addressing this problem. I’m using Cubase LE 4.0.3 that came with a TASCAM US-144 interface that I just bought. My computer is a Toshiba Satellite A105/4001 with a Centrino chip at 1.66 GHz with 3 GB RAM running Windows XP Home Edition, SP 3, that I just defragmented. The sound card that came with the computer is Realtek HD Audio and I’ve used that or the TASCAM Driver that was installed with my US-144 interface. I’m recording an acoustic grand piano into a mono microphone, with no MIDI. I’ve turned off networking. In the Control Panel I set the Processor Scheduling to favor Background Services, set the TASCAM Control Panel Audio Performance to Highest Latency. In the Devices Setup > VST Audio System I selected the TASCAM US-144 ASIO driver with Very High Audio Priority, selected 6 for Disk Preload (and tried other settings), unchecked Lower Latency and unchecked Adjust for Record Latency and left the default value of 0 Samples in the Record Shift. I’m assuming that if I’m just recording solo acoustic piano I should set latency as high as possible. I’m also assuming that the problem is that my processor can’t keep up. Is my computer adequate? Are these settings correct? Is there some additional setting that I missed? Will the full version of Cubase work any better than the LE version?

Pops, clicks and dropouts during recording or playback usually is caused by the sound card/interface latency setting being too low. Before you check the latency of your Tascam, make sure that you have the Tascam ASIO driver selected in Cubase (Devices, Device Setup, VST Multitrack (LE) or VST Audio System (LE4)). Once you are sure that you have the right driver selected for the Tascam unit, open the Tascam software an raise the audio buffer setting.

When you chance the audio buffer setting of your Tascam unit, do you hear any difference in the frequency of the pops and clicks?

You can reread my original post to check, but I think I've done all that. I went back and reset the TASCAM in the Control Panel to 'normal latency' and in Cubase 4 LE I reset Devices>Device Setup>UST Audio System>US-144> Audio Priority to 'Normal', Disk Preload to '2 second', and checked 'lower latency', and the pops, clicks and dropouts all got a lot worse, as expected, (then I put everything back to the best settings with longer latency).

Later I went back to the Steinberg.net site and went through the system requirements. If there's any weakness in my system, it's that my hard drive is only 5400rpm, but since I only want to record 5 minutes of mono audio at a time, and I have 3.5 GB of RAM, is there any way to tell Cubase to use only RAM for recording audio, or to tell Windows to allocate more RAM to Cubase 4 LE?

What else can I try?

How many real-time effects or virtual instruments do you have loaded into the project?

The problem is in fact caused by the performance of your Tascam audio buffer handling. This is evidenced when you change the setting, the frequency of the pops and clicks increase or decrease. The Centrino processor is not an officially supported processor. Since it's a interface/driver performance issue, it's possible that the tascam driver is having issues running efficiently with the Centrino processor.

When you record, the audio data is recorded to your hard drive, not the RAM. I would be interesting to contact Tascam and see if they can recreate the performance issue and see if there's that could be done on their end to address the pops and clicks.

OK. That helps. Thanks.
