Hi, How do you play an imported midi file in C4. I just want to point my midi file to a GM instrument that will play all separate midi tracks within the one midi file (drums, bass, piano etc..) I know I can route each track separately to whatever VSTs in C4, but is there a way to get that midi file playing just buy importing it into c4 and hitting play. Some of the files I have to explode and all that to get all the separate tracks to show up, but how do I get them to play each their own GM sounds without routing each track to a VST and without using an external midi device. Thanks very much

There's no way that a MIDI file will just play unless you assign a VST Instrument to the output or have the output routed to an external sound module. You can select General MIDI sounds in HALion One.
Once you have a MIDI file on a MIDI track, you can go to Devices and select VST Instruments. Click on the first VST Instrument field and load HALion One. (When it asks you if you want to create a track for HALion One, click on Cancel), Then, in HALion One, select the Load Preset option at the top of the HALion One window. You will be able to load a sound in the window that pops up. Once you have loaded a sound in HALion One, go to the MIDI track and select HALion One as the MIDI out on the Output Routing dropdown menu. The MIDI file taht is on that MIDI track will then trigger the osund that is loaded into HALion One.
Hope that helps!

Yes, there is a way!
Taken from the Guide:
"To import a Standard MIDI File song into Cubase 4.1 and playback with HALionONE, first check the MIDI preferences. Open the Preferences window and select “MIDI File”. Locate the Import Options. Make sure “Auto Dissolve Format 0” and “Import To Instrument Tracks” are both checked. Click “OK” to save the preferences and close the window. Next, select “MIDI File…” from the File>Import menu and chose a MIDI File in SMF format. Alternatively, drag & drop a MIDI file directly into the project window."
This will open your SMF ready to hit play and listen to the MIDI FILE using your HalionOne GM SoundSet.

It's even easier than that. All you have to do is enable Scope in Mediabay or Loop or Sound Browser, load Halion One as the Instrument and select the MIDI file. You can even play it in the Project Context.

Thanks man...that's the feature added in the update isn't it, I thought i'd read it somewhere before.

Thanks UlisesJazzer for the heads up!
That is a new feature added with the update. What it's doing is importing the MIDI file and loading HALion One all in one step. Technically, the MIDI file still has to trigger the virtual instrument (HALion One) in order for for you to hear it. The new feature definitely makes it a lot quicker than before!

Doing it via Mediabay is the easiest. Load the Universal Sound Module in the VST Rack, select it in the Scope Area of MB, point MB to the file and select it with autoplay enabled.
Drums are a problem for HalionOne, as the mapping can be different that standard MIDI.
