Without any playback in Cubase4, I have 50% ASIO being used. Is there a way to reduce this in order to provide more head room?
The reason I ask is because when I do go to playback with effects, I am hitting 100%. I have read that I should try increasing the buffer size, but when I do this buffer size is not an option. I am doing playback of 22 tracks through a Firepod. The only option I have going through the control panel is latency and sample rate.

You want to max the latency for playback. The single core is what's choking.
Is Multi-processing un-checked in VST Audio System?

Hello,
What is your buffer size set to on the firepod? What is the input latency currently in Devices, Device Setup, VST Audio System? Thank you.

Thanks for the reply. I moved the latency from 10ms to 25ms. This helped move ASIO to 40 - 45% without playback.
I tried un-checking Multi-processing but when I did during playback I maxed out ASIO, but when it was checked it runs about 90% during playback.

There is no buffer size to be set on the firepod - only latency (from what I can tell). The latency on the firepod is 25ms. The input and output latency under VST audio system is 25.542ms. The firepod cannot go any higher in latency.
With the above settings, ASIO is at 45% without playback. Is this normal? Or should it be 0% without playback?

Thanks for writing. Do you have any plug-ins launched? Sometimes, depending on the plug-in, it can hit the CPU even without processing taking place. Once such plug-in that can do this is a convolution reverb. Again, this is some times and not always the case. Another thing to consider is if you have any other programs running in the background that you don't necessarily need running. These are just some options to consider checking.

Thanks for the guidance. So here is what I did... I went back through all the tracks and turned off all of the inserts. When I did that the ASIO went to 0%. I turned off the reverb, but it wasn't 0%. So, I went back through and turned off the dynamics. I only had reverb and dynamics in my mix. After turning those off, ASIO went to zero.
So now my question is, is there a more efficient way to add effects such that it doesn't hit the ASIO so hard? Or is there other reverb or dynamic options that are easier on ASIO in Cubase? I only have the plug-ins that come with Cubase.

It sounds as I thought. Your CPU is just getting hit pretty hard the processing. There are some manufacturers such as Waves that make "light" versions of reverbs, etc. However, in the meantime, using 1 Reverb as a FX track and using that for all your tracks means less instances of Reverb hitting your CPU at once.
How much hard drive space do you have available? Do you save all your programs and projects to same drive? Have you you run a defrag of your drives lately? I would look to clean up as much of your PC as possible to assure enough "head-room" is available. Google "XP optimization for music" and you should find some tips on how to better optimize your PC for music use.
Let me know what develops. Thanks for supporting Steinberg!

Certain plugin's are more processor intensive than others. What are the spec's of your machine?
Thanks
