When I set up a track so that a VST instrument is being triggered by my external MIDI device (Ion IED04 drumpad), the darndest thing happens: Only about 33% of the time does the audio of the VST instrument playback when I hit the pad. The other 66% of the time it doesn't trigger any sound. HOWEVER, if I record a track using the drumpad, it registers all of the MIDI note information in the track that I record. So, when I am recording it, it is only playing the sounds a third of the time, but if I play it back, I hear all of the sounds I played. I've checked the MIDI filter area under preferences, and no MIDI is being filtered besides Sysex, and all MIDI channels are active. This is entirely perplexing. Any ideas?
Also, whenever I open a new song, I get the following warning: "Samplerate could not be set. This may be due to the sampleclock being set to external sync." Not sure whether this is related, but fixing this would be great as well.
problem MIDI Device: ION IED04 drumpad Sound card: Edirol FA66 firewire Software: Cubase Studio 4.1.1 Computer: Windows Vista (32-bit), Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 2.00 GHz, 2038 MB RAM

What vst instrument are you using? every time you hit a pad are you seeing a midi signal in Cubase?

Hi - thanks for the reply. I've tried using HALion One and Prologue, and the results are the same for both. I do consistently get a MIDI signal for each pad hit, but only get an audio signal 1/3 of the time (and thus only hear audio 1/3 of the time). The MIDI appears to be fine, as it will record all pad hits in a recording session, even if I don't hear them all.

Double check what notes are being recorded just to make sure they are not out of the range for whatever you are trying trigger.

Hi Jeff - All notes that are recorded are within the range for the VST instrument - the notes that are recorded trigger the VST instrument's sounds upon playback. The trouble is that they don't trigger all of the time when I am trying to trigger them with the Ion drumpad. So, the ION drumpad sends the MIDI info to Cubase, but for some reason the VST instrument doesn't always trigger it's sounds during this process (even for the same note). Cubase receives the info, however, and then Cubase can play it back just fine.
If I trigger the VST instrument with an external MIDI keyboard, it triggers the VST instrument's sounds. I didn't mention this in my first post, as I was worried people might just attribute the problem to the drumpad and not the software. But it has to be some *interaction* betwen the two, as the drumpad is sending MIDI information and the program is receving that MIDI information, but for whatever reason the MIDI information isn't triggering the sounds of the VST instrument.
Any more ideas?

Go to File then Preferences. Take a look at midi filter settings. The only thing that should be checked here is SYSEX. Everything else should be unchecked. And below the filter section, make sure you don't have any channel settings set on this page as well.

Hi Jeff - I have already checked this. The only information being filtered is SYSEX (it is the only thing checked) and no channels are being filtered (are selected) either.
I am pulling out my hair as it just doesn't seem to make sense. Any more ideas?

how do the notes in the key editor appear for the ones where you have a drop out? Your having a very unusal problem if you see a midi signal come in and nothing being triggered. I am curious as to whether the notes are being recorded.

Hi - all MIDI note information sent from the drumpad is recorded. MIDI activity comes in fine (the red bar registers every hit) but the sounds do not always play (the blue bar intermittantly registers a hit). So, notes that do not play are still recorded just fine in the editor, and do not look any different from the other notes that triggered the sounds of the VST instrument during recording. All notes then trigger the VST instrument upon playback of the track. A very unusual problem indeed.
Although I very much appreciate your assistance so far, this problem has been plaguing me for weeks and there is no solution in sight. Is there a number I can call for more real-time assistance?
Thanks,
- Jeff
