Only recording on the right side with MI4/CubaseSL
      #5148 - 12/31/07 01:57 AM

Hi. This is my first post here. I'm having a problem where I'm seemingly only recording on the right side.

I'm recording live with 2 SM 58's straight into the MI4 (one mic on guitar, one mic on vocals). When I listen back with headphones out of the MI4 I'm hearing a track/input in each ear, so it sounds stereo. But when I playback through the monitors OR run the monitors through the headphone jack it only comes out of one speaker.

When I look in the Transport Panel, I see in the far right window where it shows L/R signal strength that only the right side has any signal. The left side is dead silent.

When I am adding tracks to the project I'm making them stereo tracks.

To try to answer any other questions you might have, I've had the MI4/CubaseSL system for a little over 2 years, but I keep having this problem, and didn't know who to ask until now. I just pulled it out and really need to use it, and thought it was working until I tried to do real playback other than through the headphones.

Any idea what might be going on?

I'm using MI4 with Cubase SL version 3.1.0 on a G4 powerbook 667 MHz with 512MB SD RAM on OSX 10.3.9.

Thanks for your help!
-Scott

What output numbers on the MI4 are you using for monitoring in the VST connections "Outputs" tab?

Thanks.

On Outputs tab, the Bus is Steinberg MI4 Stereo Out, with Left being "1 Built-in Audio 1" and Right being "2 Built-in Audio 2" and I have my monitors connected to the "Output" section on the back of the MI4 (R/L).

Also, last time I wrote, "When I look in the Transport Panel, I see in the far right window where it shows L/R signal strength that only the right side has any signal. The left side is dead silent."

Actually, now I see that that two-window box on the far right of the Transport bar are showing input & output channels. Since the Left window is Input and I'm playing back, it apparently shouldn't be doing anything anyway. (Sorry, I'm pretty new to Cubase.)

In Cubase, go to Devices, select Device Setup and then select VST Audiobay. In VST Audiobay, make sure that you have the MI4 driver selected and not Built In Audio. Once you have the proper driver selected, go to VST Connections, select the Outputs tab and set the left and right outputs to the MI4 outputs.

If there is no MI4 option to select in VST Audiobay, go to the download section at www.steinberg.net and download the latest driver update for the MI4 for the MAC. Once the driver is installed, you will be able to select the MI4 as the default ASIO driver in Cubase.

Thanks Brad, that indeed looks to be my problem. However, it looks like it leaves me with another problem. On the downloads page for the MI4 driver update it says, "This driver can only be used with Cubase SL 3 or higher in conjunction with Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.x)..." I only have OS 10.3.9. Is there another workaround for this problem, or do you suggest downloading this one anyway? (I don't have the money to upgrade my OS.)

Also, when I go to "About" my MI4 Panel, it says my MI4 software is version 1.0.0.14 and firmware version is 1.06.

Thanks for your help!

Go to Devices and select Device Setup - Then select VST Audiobay. You will see an ASIO driver dropdown menu on the left. What driver is selected there? If the MI4 driver is not selected, you need to switch that setting to the MI4 driver.

Also, here's a link to the last available driver update for the MI4 with a Pre-Intel MAC: ftp://ftp.steinberg.net/Download/Hardware/Steinberg_MI4/Mac/PPC/DriverPackage_1.2.0.0/

However, before installing this update, be sure and check to see if you have the correct MI4 driver selected in VST Audiobay.
