Would someone be so kind as to tell me why when I have all of my tracks set to Linear and then change to Musical does everything go out of time in relation to each other when it's all perfectly on the beat as it were?

That is because not all of the tracks are set to snap to a musical timebase. For instance, if you have one audio track that has not had its tempo defined, it will fall out of time with those that have, as well as any MIDI - as time is one of the main things retained.
Linear timebase is just that linear so if you bend the time of the other tracks the linear one retains its tempo structure, only preserving the same start point, as that is the only thing that has been defined.

Hi,
Thank you for your in depth analysis of the situation, however one problem I do remember having and that is when I set a tempo track to be the same tempo as what was fixed and then go to edit it once activated, all the locator points change and cycling is no longer possible unless I change the locator points again, why?

Hello,
This is probably because you have your locators set based on the metronome timeline. Try changing the locators display to Timecode and I think they should stay in place timecode wise.
Or if locators are staying the same timecode and you want them to follow the bars and beats, change the dispaly to bars and beats. Thank you.

Ok, but if I'm using the grid and/or drum map anyway, why should it matter?

Hello,
Yes I would expect that it will affect how your locators respond, and thus, what it looks like on your screen.

Hi Chris,
Thanks very much for your reply.
I'm currently using Linear Timebase for all MIDI tracks as currently I have no audio tracks to speak of and I chose this method over Musical Timebase since I did not want to be wholly restricted to using quantise values.
Having said that I cannot understand why when I "engage" the tempo track or otherwise active it, that even when I have made no timing changes at all, it alters the locator positions previously set, so cycling from those points is no longer possible.
I really hope that Steinberg can fix this problem by the next update because I'd like to be able to start programming tempo changes at some point in the near future.
Best Regards

That is not a bug. You should be using Musical timebase as that will respond to changes in the tempo track. That's what musical timebase is a way for tracks to musically or rhythmically follow the changes in a project.
Musical timebase does not restrict you to quantize values unless you have turned on Auto Quantize when playing, or have snapping on when editing. The locators are synced to time, so they will stay on say bars 2-4, if that's where they were before the tempo was changed.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply, however I don't know why I "should" be using Musical Timebase, when everything which I scribe into the editor itself is right on-the-beat or bar as it were and I think this merely points out a vast limitation in the software, so I hope it can be addressed very soon.
Best regards

Hello,
Using Musical Timebase does not limit you to quantize all of your midi. It merely allows your midi to follow changes in the Tempo Track. I hope this helps.
