the sounds i want to record are not being input to cubase studio 4. this recent development is very confusing because i can feed sound into ableton live 5 (lite version) without any problem using the same set-up.
i have been running these programs together using rewire and then i just couldn't get cubase to record as there is no signal coming into the program. meters are as dead as most of los angeles after midnight.
system: intel mac core duo/ 2 ghz/ 1gb memory/mac os x 10.4
programs: cubase studio 4.0.1/reason 2.5/ableton live 5 (lite version)

What audio interface or sound card are you using? Be sure that the correct driver is selected in Devices - Devices Setup - VST Audio System.

the sound is being run through a mixer that is connected to the input jack on my laptop so the computer's sound card is being used.
i followed the course you recommended and found that the driver was set to built-in-audio 1.
i switched it to built-in-audio 2 and it is working like a charm.
how can i know which driver to use? is that determined by the hardware? trial and error? i don't remember changing this.
thanks for your help as this was very frustrating.

When the sound card is built in, you just need to select whatever default driver options you have and see which one works best. If you were to buy an audio interface for your laptop, you would install drivers for that interface and that specific driver would show up in VST audio system to select.
