I'm also a big fan of the Multiband Compressor in Wavelab 6 on FM Radio. Sometimes it has a little too much treble for me though, so I pull down the boost on the high frequencies. Another key could be the old you are placing things in.

Are you putting puncher last or the multiband? Crackling or static could be from an overload or distortion in one of the plugins.

I would suggest leaving the master faders at 0.
