No Click Track, Latency Issues, Loss of Recording

I am a first-timer in the recording world, except years of sequencing on my yamaha motif7 - a world very different from digital. I have a Toshiba PC with 2038MB RAM, an Intel T5200 Core 2 Duo 1.6Ghz processor, and 32-bit Windows Vista Home Premium (according to the Presonus Tech, I should be OK to record).

My Cubase LE came with a Presonus Firestudio Project I bought just a couple of weeks ago. During one of my first recording attempts I lost both the audio and the click track at about measure 15. I still had audio signal through the Presonus, but Cubase was not recognizing it (the blue audio lines next to the track were no longer moving). Since then, I have not been able to utilize the click track at all - it just does not function, and I have tried playing with the settings.

Since then, I upgraded to LE 4.1.3 through the website. Now when recording longer segments, my audio track is spliced several times; the longer I play, the more it is spliced and the further behind the recording is from the tempo line during record. And I still don't have a click track.

I have problems with playback, too. If I let cubase rest for a few minutes after I've recorded, when I come back to it and try to play back nothing is there (and yes, the monitor button is off - gray - but I've tried turning it on and off, too). I am not sure why it will play back one minute and give me nothing the next.

I don't know if there are some known bugs with Windows Vista, but maybe that's a problem? Also, so you know, I have upgraded everything I can - Presonus drivers, LE 4 upgrades - and I have run Disk Defrag and cleaned up every unnecessary file I could find.

Thank you very much for your attention and help. I wish I had this all figured out by now, but I am glad there is support for all this.
