SOUND CARD COMPATABILITY VIA VST SYSTEM LINK

AFTER RESEARCHING NUMEROUS WEB SIGHTS PERTAINING TO VST SYSTEM LINK SET UP,I HAVE FOUND OUT THERE ASTOUNDING NUMBERS OF CONSUMERS WHO ARE FINDING OUT THAT AFTER THEY HAVE INVESTED LOTS OF $ INTO CERTAIN SOUND CARDS THAT FOR SOME REASON OR OTHER THEY ARE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE LE VERSION IN SETTING UP A SUCCESSFUL VST SYSTEM LINK AND VIRTUALLY HAVE GIVEN UP ON OBTAINING THIS FEATURE.
QUESTION: IS THERE A LIST OF FOR SURE SOUND CARDS THAT HAVE BEEN PROVEN TO WORK WITH THE LE VERSION.ALSO I LATER FOUND OUT,LE IS MORE OR LESS THE FREE VERSION OF CUBASE,IS AN UPGRADE OF ONE OR THE OTHER MORE LIKELY TO SUCEED IN OBTAINING AN OPERABLE VST SYSTEM LINK FEATURE.I KNOW THE RME SOUND CARD DISPLAYS IN THE DEVICE MENU OPTIONS,HOWEVER NOT EVERYONE CAN AFFORD A PAIR OF 600 DOLLAR SOUND CARDS TO MAKE 2 COMPUTERS SYNC PROPERLY WITH EACH OTHER.IS AN UPGRADE OF ONE TYPE OR THE OTHER RECOMMENDED OR IS THIS STILL POSSIBLE TO OBTAIN WITH THE LE VERSION AND 2 EMU 0404 SOUND CARDS?

System link works best with a digital optical connection. spdif usually doesn't work well with system link.

UNFORTUANUATLY FOR ME I HAVE DIGITAL OPTICAL CABLES INSTALLED AND HAVE NOT GOTTEN ANYWHERE NO TRANMIT/RECEIVE SYNC, NO DEVICE DISPLAY IN LOWER PANE.? ABLE TO SEND AND RECEIVE AUDIO BETWEEN COMPUTERS,HOWEVER SETTING UP EXTRA BUSSES FOR DIGITAL SIGNAL AND AUDIO SIGNAL IS MOST LIKELY MY ERROR,I COULD SAY I MOST LIKELY AM UNSURE AT THIS POINT EXACTLY WHAT INSTRUCTIONS ARE DESCRIBING AND HOW TO PROPERLY ROUTE AND WHAT TO ROUTE?

What version of Cubase are you using on both machines?
