Steinbergusers.com: no MIDI playback thru USB device

Running a Boss DR 770 drum machine midi in and out thru Lexicon Lambda USB interface. Planned on inputting basic drum patterns without dedicating to the sounds. I see the midi info, I can edit it, I can play it back thru the awesome internal microsoft GS synth, but I assign the channel out to the lambda and it will not play back to trigger the drum machine. I recorded a guitar track and I can get audio out, though only to one side at the moment. I also get the intermittent problem "The ASIO driver Lambda ASIO could not be started!" The audio works for a while then the prompt comes up and I have to reset it in the device setup and it works for a while.
My set up is
Cubase LE 4
Dell laptop pentium 1.86Ghz processor
2 GB RAM
Lexicon Lambda USB interface
