Sudden 98-100% CPU - Disk I/O none - App Lock
      07/06/08 08:10 PM

--- This is LONG but I wanted to give all the details I know. --

I am running Cubase LE 1.0.10. I have 7 drum tracks. I recorded twice and moved the punch in to the existing tracks. So 14 moved to 7, if that makes sense. I have a bass track that has a punch in copied to it. Same with the Rhythm guitar. Vocals are now 1 track with 4 punch in. Lead guitar is 3 tracks.

i use the Kjaerhus audio free VST plug ins. Compressor and Limiter on the master VSTs. I use the Compressor and a Graphic EQ for each channel.

I use automation on each track to adjust faders. I do not use real-time VST parameter adjustments.

I am running a Dell Dimension 8110 desktop. 2.53Ghz 512Mb RAM, and 7200Rpm Drive. It's a stock box. To upgrade the RAM is the price of a new box. (Dell proprietary Memory)

With that said, I am having a devil of a time. Everything stared well. I recorded all the songs and got the first one all the way through the final mix ready to be sent to Master. The next song went great. (Need to touch up a guitar part. Then its ready.)

Then Cubase went south. The app went to 100% CPU. Acted locked. I had to wait it out to save. It took forever but it did finally save it. I removed a vocal track and it started working again. I re-recorded vocals and continued. I edited guitar tracks. It started locking up again when merged tracks down to a single track. I did a drag and drop of the recorded section from two tracks back to one. (I kept it on one track to keep fader and inserts the same. I use the copy/paste but this was easier.)

I tried removing all VSTs from the tracks - No Use
I tried removing all unused VST from the PC - No Use
I made sure there were no other app running. Removed everything from the Startup and Start up registry.
I have a 512Mb RAM this is small I know. The app is using 105,000Kb of RAM when running. And it was fine for a larger song. Rebooting does not help.

Upgrading this box is not an option. I can get a new box for the price of the RAM. (Insert Dell Rant here!)

I had a problem getting this version (1.0.10) of LE running on Vista. So that also kills a new box.

I installed another new 7200RPM drive. - No Use

I have tried removing tracks - Worked Once - Now that trick does not work.

Now the song I have in the "can" will not run.

What has happened? I am I SOL?

What is the threshold i need to be looking for?

Am I at the point that I need to be taking my wave files to a friends ProTools studio and starting over?

I have spent 22 hours over the 4th weekend fighting this thing. I have been singing the Cubase praises. But I am loosing my mind with it right now.

If anybody has a clue, I am listening. I will try anything I can. Or can afford.

Stephen
