Upgraded from LE to Cubase Studio 4.0.2, using a Dell desktop P4 2.2 Ghz, Windows XP SP2, 2 gigs of RAM, LaCie Firewire drive, Firepod recording at 44.1, and minimal active inputs. LE works fine still, CS4 hacks and sputters, with a lovely ripping-sounding half-speed thing, often at the same spot of a song, with only a few audio tracks in the song. Same on tunes recorded in LE and opened in CS4. Performance indicator goes over the top, but the hard drive indicator does not. Seems like an audio buffer issue, but unlike LE, CS4 doesn't allow me to specify buffer size. Firepod control panel doesn't either. Suggestions? This should be working like a charm.

Yes it should be. I am using a less equipped machine myself.
Update CS4 to the latest version of 4.1 to start with. Next (if this doesn't work) go through your project turning off plugins and instruments to see what drops the cpu usage meter the most and report back on that.

Another thing to consider: firewire is great in theory, but running more than one firewire device simultaneously can cause many issues. Make sure your firewire drive is chained through the firepod, and have the drive and the firepod turned on when you turn on your computer. If this makes no difference, try dumping one of your projects onto an internal drive temporarily and accessing it from there just for testing purposes.

Also - the firepod latency value is actually directly related to buffer size. If you are set to 2ms latency it will be using a small buffer allowing for great direct monitoring but bad performance once you get a few plugins in there. Remember that one instance of certain CPU hogs can eat up most of your power.
