Why does Cubase/Nuendo inform me that "the sample rate cannot be set due to external sync?"

This occurs when there is a sample rate mismatch or if proper audio sync cannot be established with the audio hardware. To address this error, make sure the sample rate in your project and on your audio hardware are set to the same value.
